Make node-report part of core runtime because: 1. When enabled, node-report significantly helps root cause various types of problems, including support issues sent to the various repos of the Node.js organization. 2. The requirement of explicitly adding the dependency to node-report in user applications often represents a blocker to adoption. Major deviation from the module version of the node-report is that the report is generated in JSON format, as opposed to human readable text. Remove the following properties: - `preserveSymlinks` - `preserveSymlinksMain` - `experimentalModules` - `userLoader` - `experimentalVMModules` - `experimentalREPLAwait` - `exposeInternals` We used to use them to pass cli option values from C++ into JS, but now the values are obtained in JS land using `require('internal/options').getOptionValue` instead so they are unused. Also removes `test/parallel/test-internal-modules-expose.js` which tests `--expose-internals`. We already have hundreds of tests depending on `--expose-internals`, they are more than enough to test the functionality of the flag. 2019-01-09worker: remove `--experimental-worker` flagAnna Henningsen
Having an experimental feature behind a flag makes change if we are expecting significant breaking changes to its API. Since the Worker API has been essentially stable since its initial introduction, and no noticeable doubt about possibly not keeping the feature around has been voiced, removing the flag and thereby reducing the barrier to experimentation, and consequently receiving feedback on the implementation, seems like a good idea. 2018-12-09inspector: split the HostPort being used and the one parsed from CLIJoyee Cheung
Instead of using a shared pointer of the entire debug option set, pass the parsed debug option to inspector classes by value because they are set once the CLI argument parsing is done. Add another shared pointer to HostPort being used by the inspector server, which is copied from the one in the debug options initially. The port of the shared HostPort is 9229 by default and can be specified as 0 initially but will be set to the actual port of the server once it starts listening. This makes the shared state clearer and makes it possible to use `require('internal/options')` in JS land to query the CLI options instead of using `process._breakFirstLine` and other underscored properties of `process` since we are now certain that these values should not be altered once the parsing is done and can be passed around in copies without locks. This is a major refactor of our Node’s parser. See `node_options.cc` for how it is used, and `node_options-inl.h` for the bulk of its implementation. Unfortunately, the implementation has come to have some complexity, in order to meet the following goals: - Make it easy to *use* for defining or changing options. - Keep it (mostly) backwards-compatible. - No tests were harmed as part of this commit. - Be as consistent as possible. - In particular, options can now generally accept arguments through both `--foo=bar` notation and `--foo bar` notation. We were previously very inconsistent on this point. - Separate into different levels of scope, namely per-process (global), per-Isolate and per-Environment (+ debug options). - Allow programmatic accessibility in the future. - This includes a possible expansion for `--help` output. This commit also leaves a number of `TODO` comments, mostly for improving consistency even more (possibly with having to modify tests), improving embedder support, as well as removing pieces of exposed configuration variables that should never have become part of the public API but unfortunately are at this point. Removes the requirement to use `--trace-events-enabled` to enable trace events. Tracing is enabled automatically if there are any enabled categories. Adds a new `trace_events` module with an API for enabling/disabling trace events at runtime without a command line flag. ```js const trace_events = require('trace_events'); const categories = [ 'node.perf', 'node.async_hooks' ]; const tracing = trace_events.createTracing({ categories }); tracing.enable(); // do stuff tracing.disable(); ``` Multiple `Tracing` objects may exist and be enabled at any point in time. Previously, built-in modules are registered before main() via __attribute__((constructor)) mechanism in GCC and similiar mechanism in MSVC. This causes some issues when node is built as static library. Calling module registration function for built-in modules in node::Init() helps to avoid the issues. Implement a special async_hooks listener that forwards information about async tasks to V8Inspector asyncTask* API, thus enabling DevTools feature "async stack traces". The feature is enabled only on 64bit platforms due to a technical limitation of V8 Inspector: inspector uses a pointer as a task id, while async_hooks use 64bit numbers as ids. To avoid performance penalty of async_hooks when not debugging, the new listener is enabled only when the process enters a debug mode: - When the process is started with `--inspect` or `--inspect-brk`, the listener is enabled immediately and async stack traces lead all the way to the first tick of the event loop. - When the debug mode is enabled via SIGUSR1 or `_debugProcess()`, the listener is enabled together with the debugger. As a result, only async operations started after the signal was received will be correctly observed and reported to V8 Inspector. For example, a `setInterval()` called in the first tick of the event will not be shown in the async stack trace when the callback is invoked. This behaviour is consistent with Chrome DevTools. Last but not least, this commit fixes handling of InspectorAgent's internal property `enabled_` to ensure it's set back to `false` after the debugger is deactivated (typically via `process._debugEnd()`). 2017-08-04http2: introducing HTTP/2James M Snell
At long last: The initial *experimental* implementation of HTTP/2. This is an accumulation of the work that has been done in the nodejs/http2 repository, squashed down to a couple of commits. The original commit history has been preserved in the nodejs/http2 repository. This PR introduces the nghttp2 C library as a new dependency. This library provides the majority of the HTTP/2 protocol implementation, with the rest of the code here providing the mapping of the library into a usable JS API. Within src, a handful of new node_http2_*.c and node_http2_*.h files are introduced. These provide the internal mechanisms that interface with nghttp and define the `process.binding('http2')` interface. The JS API is defined within `internal/http2/*.js`. There are two APIs provided: Core and Compat. The Core API is HTTP/2 specific and is designed to be as minimal and as efficient as possible. The Compat API is intended to be as close to the existing HTTP/1 API as possible, with some exceptions. Tests, documentation and initial benchmarks are included. The `http2` module is gated by a new `--expose-http2` command line flag. When used, `require('http2')` will be exposed to users. Note that there is an existing `http2` module on npm that would be impacted by the introduction of this module, which is the main reason for gating this behind a flag. When using `require('http2')` the first time, a process warning will be emitted indicating that an experimental feature is being used. To run the benchmarks, the `h2load` tool (part of the nghttp project) is required: `./node benchmarks/http2/simple.js benchmarker=h2load`. Only two benchmarks are currently available. Additional configuration options to enable verbose debugging are provided: ``` $ ./configure --debug-http2 --debug-nghttp2 $ NODE_DEBUG=http2 ./node ``` The `--debug-http2` configuration option enables verbose debug statements from the `src/node_http2_*` files.
