<p>நேற்றுக் கள்ளுக்கடையில் நானிருந்த சமயம் ஒருவன் தனது சிகரெட்டை பற்ற வைக்க
வேண்டி தீப்பொறிக் கேட்டான். தேவையொன்று உருவாகி பொருளீட்டும் வாய்ப்பொன்றும்
உருவாவதை உணர்ந்த நான் பத்து பைசாக்கு பற்ற வைக்க ஒத்துக் கொண்டேன். ஆனால்
அவனுக்கு தீப்பொறியினைத் தந்து விடவில்லை. மாறாக அவனது சிகரெட்டை எரித்துக்
கொள்வதற்கான உரிமத்தினை மட்டுமே வழங்கினேன். அத் தீப்பொறியின் மீதான எமது
உரிமம் அவனை அதனைப் பிறருக்கு தருவதிலிருந்து தடுத்தது. எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் மேலாக
அத் தீப்பொறி என்னுடையதாயிற்றே! அவன் நன்றாகக் குடித்திருந்தான். என்னைப்
பித்துக்குளி என்று கருதியவாறே எமது தீப்பொறியையும் (உரிமத்துடனான)
பெற்றுக்கொண்டான். சில நிமிடங்கள் சென்றிருக்கும். அவனது நண்பனொருவன் அவனைப்
பற்றவைக்கச் சொல்ல எனது பதற்றத்தை அதிகப் படுத்தியவனாய் எமது நெருப்பைக் கொண்டு
அவனது நண்பனுக்கு பற்ற வைத்தும் விட்டான். எனக்கு எரிச்சலாய்
இருந்தது. கள்ளுக்கடையின் மறுபுறத்திற்கு செல்ல முற்பட்டேன். எனது எரிச்சலை
இன்னும் அதிகப் படுத்தும் விதமாக அவனது நண்பன் அவனைச் சுற்றியிருந்த பிறருக்கு
பற்ற வைத்தான். சிறிது நேரத்திற்குள்ளாக கள்ளுக் கடையின் அப்பகுதியிலிருந்த
அனையவரும் எமது நெருப்பை எமது அனுமதியில்லாமலேயே பயன்படுத்தத்
துவங்கியிருந்தனர். ஆத்திரம் தலைக்கேறியவனாய் ஒவ்வொருவரின் மீதும் பாய்ந்து
அவர்களிடமிருந்து சிகரெட்டுகளைப் பிடுங்கி தரையில் இட்டு மிதித்து அணைக்கத்
துவங்கினேன்.</p>
<p>விநோதமாகக் கதவருகே இருந்த காவலாளி எமது சொத்துரிமைக்கு சிறிதும்
மதிப்பளியாதவராய் எம்மை இழுத்து வெளியேத் தள்ளி விட்டார்.</p>
