<p><em>Vrije software</em> betekent dat gebruikers van de software vrijheid
hebben. (De kwestie gaat niet over prijs.) We hebben het
GNU-besturingssysteem ontwikkeld zodat gebruikers vrijheid kunnen hebben bij
hun computeractiviteiten.</p>
<p>Specifieker betekent vrije software dat gebruikers de <a
href="/philosophy/free-sw.html">vier essentiële vrijheden</a> hebben:
(0) om het programma uit te voeren, (1) om te bekijken hoe het programma
werkt en het te wijzigen, (2) om exacte kopieën te verspreiden en (3)
om aangepaste versies te verspreiden.</p>
<p>Software verschilt van materiële zaken zoals stoelen, boterhammen of
olie, omdat het makkelijker gekopieerd, verspreid én veranderd kan
worden. Juist déze mogelijkheden zorgen ervoor dat software nuttig is, en
wij vinden dat gebruikers deze eigenschappen van software volledig moeten
