1984年、モダンなコンピュータにプロプライエタリなオペレーティング・システムをインストールしないで使うことは不可能でした。そのオペレーティング・システムは、制限されたライセンスで取得するしかなかったのです。同輩のコンピュータユーザと自由にソフトウェアを共有することは、誰にも認められませんでした。自分自身の必要に合わせるためにソフトウェアを変更することも大変難しいことでした。ソフトウェアの所有者がわたしたちのそれぞれを分かつ壁を打ち立てたのです。
