<p><em>Freie Software</em> bedeutet, dass Softwarenutzer Freiheit haben (es
geht also nicht um den Preis). Wir entwickelten das GNU-Betriebssystem,
damit Nutzer Freiheit bei ihrer Datenverarbeitung haben können.</p>
<p>Konkret bedeutet Freie Software, Nutzer besitzen <a
href="/philosophy/free-sw">vier wesentliche Freiheiten</a>: (0) das Programm
ausführen, (1) den Quellcode untersuchen und abändern, (2) exakte Kopien
redistribuieren und (3) modifizierte Varianten distribuieren.</p>
<p>Software unterscheidet sich von materiellen Objekten ‑ wie
Stühlen, Brötchen oder Benzin ‑ darin, dass sie viel
