1 {% extends "common/news.j2" %} 2 {% block body_content %} 3
2025-11: GNU Taler v1.2 released
4
5 We are happy to announce the release of GNU Taler v1.2. 6
7
8 This release focuses on a completely new component, the GNU Taler 9 Donation Authority, or short 10 the Donau. 11 With it, tax authorities can give recognized charities 12 the ability to issue donation receipts to donors. 13 At the end of the year, donors can combine 14 their donation receipts into a single donation statement and 15 submit that with their taxes to receive a deduction. 16 Following GNU Taler's design principles, 17 which charities the donor donated to would 18 remain private, while the income to each charity 19 would be transparent. 20
21 We are interested in contacts at tax authorities and 22 charities to roll out this system. 23
24
About GNU Taler
25
26 GNU Taler is a Free Software payment system that preserves the privacy of 27 payers while ensuring that income is visible to authorities. Regulated 28 payment service providers use the Taler protocol to issue digital cash 29 denominated in a fiat currency. The digital cash tokens are stored in 30 electronic wallets under the full 31 control of its respective owner. The payment service provider has an escrow 32 bank account holding the equivalent of all digital cash in circulation. 33
34
35 Merchants redeeming digital cash receive aggregate transactions over the 36 respective amount into their regular bank account. Digital cash transactions 37 happen basically instantly, and must be performed online to prevent 38 double-spending. 39
40
41 Support exists for <a 42 href="https://www.taler.net/papers/suerf2023en.pdf">offline 43 points-of-sales to accept transactions where only the customer is 44 online. GNU Taler is scalable and technologically suitable for 45 regional currencies (such as eNetzbon), 46 commercial deployments (such as Taler 47 Operations AG) or <a 48 href="https://www.snb.ch/en/mmr/papers/id/working_paper_2021_03">central bank 49 digital currencies (CBDC). 50
51
Changes in GNU Taler v1.2
52
53 For GNU Taler v1.2 we addressed over 50 individual issues.
