 <p><em>自由ソフトウェア</em>は、ソフトウェアの利用者に自由があることを意味します。(値段の問題ではありません。)
 コンピューティングに関して利用者が自由を有するよう、わたしたちはGNUオペレーティング・システムを開発しました。</p>
 
 <p>具体的には、自由ソフトウェアは利用者が<a
 href="/philosophy/free-sw.html">4つの必須の自由を有する</a>ことを意味します: (0) プログラムを実行する、(1)
 ソースコード形式でプログラムを研究し変更する、(2) そのままのコピーを再配布する、そして、(3) 改変した版を配布する。</p>
 
 <p>ソフトウェアは物質的なもの&mdash;たとえば椅子、サンドウィッチ、ガソリンなど&mdash;とは、それをコピーしたり変更したりするのが容易であるという点で異なります。これらの容易性がソフトウェアが有用である理由です。開発者だけでなく、プログラムの利用者もこういった容易性を自由に活用できるべきだと、わたしたちは信じています。</p>
