As of September 2020, it is possible to 19 watch YouTube videos without running any nonfree software, even coming 20 in via Tor, via some of the “Invidious” intermediary sites.
21 22
23 We recommend using LibreJS with them. The Invidious sites are not 24 all alike: some won't let you in without nonfree Javascript code. 25 Also, while most of the JavaScript code on those sites carries a free 26 license, there is one file, handlers.js, which does not. LibreJS will 27 prevent its execution, and watching videos still works.
28 29
30 There is also a free add-on for Firefox, called ViewTube, that permits 31 direct access to watch videos on YouTube. It is preinstalled in the 32 GNU browser, IceCat, and you can load it into Firefox. The free 33 program youtube-dl is also available; it gets data out of the site's 34 JavaScript code but doesn't run that code. But youtube.com is likely 35 to block these means of access if you come via Tor.
36 37
38 As a result of these access methods, posting videos on YouTube does 39 not currently put them off limits to the free world. That is good, 40 and we hope it lasts, but we cannot count on them to keep working. 41 The add-on broke once in 2019 because of some change in YouTube. That 42 time, a corrected add-on was released after a few weeks. Next time, 43 who knows? Thus, posting on YouTube is a fragile solution 44 unless/until Google commits to supporting libre access.
45 46
47 Please don't use the host name youtube.com (or its aliases) to refer 48 to a video on YouTube. Instead, refer to one of the Invidious 49 intermediary sites that accepts visits via Tor (test it!). That is 50 fail-safe: if anything breaks, your link will fail, rather than lead 51 people to run nonfree software.
52 53
What else Was Wrong with YouTube
54 55
This is what we formerly said, until 2019, about YouTube as a place to post 56 videos or refer to videos.
57 58
59
Normal use of YouTube involves use of nonfree software. 60 61
62
In the HTML5 mode, it involves running 63 a nonfree JavaScript 64 program. For some videos, it also requires the nonfree Adobe 65 DRM software that has been incorporated into proprietary browsers 66 and Firefox, but not into the GNU browsers 67 including IceCat.
68 69
In the (deprecated) non-HTML5 mode, it involves use of Flash 70 Player, which is nonfree. It even tells users to install Flash 71 Player.
72
73
74 75
Without the nonfree software, you can't even see the YouTube 76 pages. Nowadays, without running the nonfree JavaScript code, 77 the browser window appears blank.
78 79
YouTube tries to stop people from downloading copies. 80 The nonfree JavaScript code for some videos does not allow 81 the browser to save a copy. This is a form of DRM. 82
83 84
There is a free 85 program, ytdl, 86 which can download the video for some YouTube pages, but there 87 is no complete free software solution for access in a browser. 88
89 90
91 “ContentID is exactly the thing YouTube claims it doesn't do: 92 93 privately mediating ownership of [publications] without involving the law.” 94
95 96
97 98
One thing about YouTube that is not a moral strike against 99 it is nonfree software on YouTube servers—if there is any. We 100 as possible users of YouTube can't tell whether the servers run any 101 nonfree software, because that has no effect on us—therefore 102 it doesn't do any wrong to us.
103 104
If there are any nonfree programs running on YouTube servers, they 105 mistreat Google by denying Google control of that aspect of its 106 computing. We hope that Google will reclaim its freedom by ceasing to 107 use those nonfree programs, if any. But those programs do not mistreat 108 the users of YouTube, so they are not a reason to refuse 109 to use that service.
110 111
It is also possible that all the software running on YouTube 112 servers is free—either published free software or private 113 unreleased free software.
114 115
116 117
To post a video without requiring nonfree software to view it, 118 you can place the video as an Ogg Theora or WebM file on an ordinary web site. 119 If you are concerned there will be a lot of download traffic, you 120 can seed a torrent and suggest people download through that.
121 122
Another way to publish videos on the web using free software is 123 GNU MediaGoblin. Ideally 124 you will set up 125 your own server, or run 126 one for your family and friends, but you can also post on 127 128 public servers.
129 130
Please 131 132 contribute to GNU MediaGoblin if you can.
133
134 135
136 137
138
139 140
Please send general FSF & GNU inquiries to 141 <gnu@gnu.org>. 142 There are also other ways to contact 143 the FSF.
