Not 95% free, not 99.5%, but 100%. The name of the 25 system, GNU, is a recursive acronym meaning GNU's Not Unix—a way 26 of paying tribute to the technical ideas of Unix, while at the same time 27 saying that GNU is something different. Technically, GNU is like Unix. 28 But unlike Unix, GNU gives its users freedom.
29 30
Completely free system 31 distributions (“distros”) meeting this goal are 32 available today, many using the <a 33 href="https://www.fsfla.org/svnwiki/selibre/linux-libre/">Linux-libre kernel (the <a 34 href="/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html">relationship between GNU and the Linux 35 kernel is described more fully elsewhere). The <a 36 href="/software/software.html">GNU packages have been designed to 37 work together so we could have a functioning GNU system. It has turned 38 out that they also serve as a common “upstream” for many 39 distros, so contributions to GNU packages help the free software 40 community as a whole. Naturally, work on GNU is ongoing, with the goal 41 to create a system that gives the greatest freedom to computer users. 42 GNU packages include user-oriented applications, utilities, tools, 43 libraries, even games—all the programs that an operating system 44 can usefully offer to its users. New 45 packages are welcome.
46 47
Thousands of people have joined in to make GNU the success it is 48 today, and there are many ways to 49 contribute, both technical and non-technical. GNU developers gather 50 from time to time in GNU Hackers Meetings, 51 sometimes as part of the larger free software community <a 52 href="https://libreplanet.org/">LibrePlanet conferences.
53 54
GNU has been supported in several ways by the <a 55 href="https://www.fsf.org/">Free Software Foundation, the nonprofit 56 organization also founded by rms to advocate free software ideals. 57 Among other things, the FSF accepts copyright assignments and 58 disclaimers, so it can act in court on behalf of GNU programs. (To be 59 clear, contributing a program to GNU does not require 60 transferring copyright to the FSF. If you do assign copyright, the FSF 61 will enforce the GPL for the program if someone violates it; if you keep 62 the copyright, enforcement will be up to you.)
63 64
The ultimate goal is to provide free software to do all of the 65 jobs computer users want to do—and thus make proprietary software 66 a thing of the past.
67

68 69
Footnote
70
71
“GNU” is pronounced as <a 72 href="/gnu/pronunciation.html">one syllable with a hard g.
73
74
75 76
77 78
79
80 81
Please send general FSF & GNU inquiries to 82 <gnu@gnu.org>. 83 There are also other ways to contact 84 the FSF.
